Quockerwodger – originating from the 1850’s, this English word pertains to a puppet who needs someone to pull their strings.
Haven’t we all heard someone being called a puppet or even a muppet? Basically meaning, they rely on someone else’s opinion rather than thinking for themselves. Well back in the 1850’s, these people may have been called a quockerwodger and I think I like that a whole lot better. It has a real ring to it.
I do have an absolute love of puppets though and have always felt sorry for them because they can’t move forward on their own. Someone else has to propel them and give them a voice. I think that’s rather sad. I have been making a series of images revolving around puppets for quite a while now. It has been one of my favourite projects to do. They each have such different personalities which can only be seen in their eyes, because their movements and voices are those of the person pulling the strings.
I won’t be calling them quockerwodgers because I love them so much, but I will certainly be saving the word for future use. It suits some people so aptly.
Happy cutting the strings….Livvy xxx
