‘One bite and all your dreams will come true’

I’ve just made it in time for Sleepy Saturday. I slept in today and just haven’t had a chance to type this. But it’s just before midnight on Saturday, in Australia at least, so I’m still in time to post this.

So, other than the sleeping beauty, Snow White is possibly the most famous princess to go to sleep. Of course, she had to wait for her Prince Charming to come along and give her the kiss of life, and awaken she did.

I know there is a lot of controversy over the Prince kissing Snow White without her consent and other than the fact that it is an old fairy tale, so consent was probably never discussed when this was written, I have a different take on this recent uproar. Snow White was asleep and would never have woken without Prince Charming’s kiss. Now if someone stopped breathing in front of you and was collapsed on the floor, would you seek their consent before doing CPR, also known as the kiss of life? Of course you wouldn’t.

I think the biggest offense to be found in this story and others of the same genre, is how a step mother is so often portrayed as an evil, murderous witch in fairy tales. Step mothers all around the world are tarred with the wicked fairy tale brush and I’m sure the majority of them are loving, wonderful people, loving a child they didn’t birth. So the fact that the words ‘wicked’ and ‘stepmother’ are so often combined for no real reason. That to me is a bigger concern.

Sometimes I think we take things way too seriously while avoiding the subjects that are REALLY important, like the horrendous death toll of women being killed by partners, jilted lovers or complete strangers. THAT is something we should take seriously, not a centuries old fairy tale in which a fictional prince kisses a fictional princess to save her life. I’m sure some of you will disagree with my point of view on this, but honestly, let’s choose our battles and make it the ones which matter.

Anyway, I’m now off to bed because I am sleepy and Saturday is almost gone..
