A truly good book teaches me  better than to read it. I must soon lay it down, and commence living on its hint.  What I began by reading.  I must finish by acting……. Henry David Thoreau

One of my best friends in high school was Alys.. She was also one of my bridesmaids when I got married and Aimee’s godmother.  She was one of the biggest bookworms I’ve ever met. She read everything she could lay her hands on.  She passed away in 2010 from a brain tumour.. This is in honor of her.  xxx

I love books.. Maybe eventually I’ll cave and buy myself a kindle or Ereader but for now, I just love my books.  I love the smell of them, the feel of them in your hands, the experience of turning the page and that sigh that naturally happens when you close the last page of a good book.  I know a lot of people  love their kindles and read voraciously from them.  Whichever you prefer, as long as we are reading, we are opening our minds to another person’s ideas, experiences and thoughts.  It doesn’t matter whether your choice is fiction, autobiography or self help.. inspiration is inspiration!

So I had a thought yesterday.  Not everyone wants to write a blog to share their inspirations, although a lot of us do.  Even if we do, getting it out there is not always an easy thing to do.  They tell me going viral is easy enough but I think it’s only easy when someone is getting hurt or making a complete idiot of themselves.  So how do you share your inspiration.Over the years I have read so many books that have helped me or inspired me and have wanted to share them with others. You probably all know that I love the Pay it Forward movie and the movement it has inspired so this all got me thinking about ways of spreading the word about our favorite inspirations.

There is a book exchange type website called Bookcrossing.com which encourages people to register on their website, then leave a book in a public place to be picked up and shared with others.  There is a tracking system involved and these books can go world wide.  I think it’s a fantastic idea.  Now I don’t want to reinvent the wheel.  This movement is superb and I don’t in any way want to encroach on their idea.  I would love to do something similar but specialising in your most inspirational book.

My idea is to find your most inspirational book.  It doesn’t have to be new: it can be from a second hand shop, garage sale or indeed your own library if you are so inclined to give your book away.  Then write in the front or back cover what you gained from reading the book put it in a clear bag, print out the picture at the bottom of this blog and pop it in the bag as well, then leave it somewhere you think it will do the most good.  You can leave your email address in the cover too if you like but don’t leave too much identifying information for safety reasons.

Some places that may be good might be a college cafeteria, near a public library, in a train station waiting room, at a doctors surgery, an airport or any other place you can think of where you think people might be looking for some inspiration.  The idea is that the person who picks it up, will choose to participate and either pass that same book along if they were inspired by it, and can add their message to it too or they can get another book which has always inspired them and do the same thing.

Inspiration comes in all forms so if you have read a fictional novel that inspired you to go out and learn photography then share it and write the reason why it meant so much to you.. You may have read an autobiography written by someone who achieved great things.. write it down and let the person who picks up your book hear about why it inspired you.. Perhaps a book written by your favorite self help guru encouraged you to challenge yourself and as a result you have started a new career or a new blog or a new hobby…. whatever it is that has inspired you… share it with another person and let them experience not just your joy but the joy that comes from being inspired themselves.

I’m going to start the process myself today… and will put the book Change your life in 7 Days by Paul McKenna somewhere it can be found.. Ill have a walk around my home town a bit later and find the right place. I’ll attach the picture here to it and will write a bit of my story in the cover so the finder will understand how much it means to me.. and then place the book where it can be found.  Then I’ll add another post on here to tell you about it… I’m hoping if you decide to join in, you’ll also add to the next post I put up and tell me about what book you shared and where you put it.

If you aren’t a reader but you have a DVD which totally inspired you, consider doing the same thing with that.. Some of my greatest inspirations have come from movies.. The legend of Bagger Vance, Believe in Me, Pay it Forward, The Bucket List, Under the Tuscan Sun, these are all movies that have inspired me in one way or another… whether they inspired me to be better, to travel, to put plans into action, to focus more or to show more kindness, they have inspired me.. so if your inspirations comes from a movie, consider leaving it out for someone else to share.

The very worst thing that can happen is that someone gets a free book or dvd and doesn’t share it…. But the good things that can happen from this is that you may inspire someone to improve their life.. Wow! We sometimes don’t realise what a great thing that is.  To inspire someone else to take even a small step towards a better life is huge because all great journeys start with a single step.  Your favorite book or DVD might travel right across the world.  Hopefully, the recipients will send a note to the email address I’ve added or on here, which says where they are and where they found it.. just so we can see how far it has travelled… but if not, they will have been inspired, if not by the book or DVD, then by your kindness.

We can change the world one book at a time.

Happy Inspirational Book Bombing… Livvy 🙂
